These are four different climates, not four settings of the same one. A Finnish sauna is hot and dry, a banya is cooler and wet, a steam room is cool and saturated, and an infrared cabin barely heats the air at all. A wool hat helps in the first two, does very little in the third, and is close to pointless in the fourth.

Why humidity changes everything
Air temperature on its own tells you very little about how a room will feel. Dry air holds almost no heat energy relative to its temperature and transfers it slowly; water vapour holds a great deal and transfers it fast by condensing on your skin.
This is why a Finnish sauna at 90 °C and 10% humidity is tolerable for fifteen minutes while a steam room at 45 °C and 100% humidity feels punishing at the same duration. It is the same reason a burst of löyly — water thrown on the stones — changes a Finnish sauna instantly without moving the thermometer much. You did not raise the temperature. You raised the rate at which heat reaches you.
It also explains why the four rooms behave so differently for wool.
What wool actually does at high humidity
Wool insulates by trapping still air. Dry air conducts heat at roughly 0.024 W/m·K; water conducts at around 0.60 W/m·K, about twenty-five times faster. Every pocket of trapped air that fills with water stops insulating and starts conducting.
Merino holds a lot of water before that becomes obvious — saturation regain is around 35% of its dry weight — which is why a wool hat feels dry long after a synthetic one feels clammy. But the physics catches up. Measurements on wool fabrics show thermal conductivity rising by more than three times as moisture content increases. Wool still outperforms cotton badly when wet, retaining roughly 40–60% of its insulation against cotton's under 10%, because the crimped fibres keep some structure. It just does not outperform its own dry self.
There is a second, stranger effect. When wool absorbs water vapour it releases heat — around 277 joules per gram of water taken up. In a Finnish sauna this is negligible. In a steam room, where the hat is absorbing moisture continuously from saturated air, it means the hat is generating a small amount of heat against your head at exactly the moment its insulation is failing.
So the honest position on a steam room: a wool hat there is a damp cover, not an insulator, and there is no strong reason to wear one. We sell wool sauna hats and that is still the answer.
Finnish sauna: where the hat earns its keep
The Finnish sauna is the one case where the physics all points the same direction. The air is hot enough to be genuinely uncomfortable at head height, dry enough that a wool hat stays dry and keeps insulating, and stratified enough that the top of your head is the part taking the load.
Stratification is the point most people underestimate. Hot air rises, so a sauna is not one temperature — it is a gradient. On the upper bench your head sits considerably hotter than your feet, and the difference across a well-heated cabin can be substantial. The thermometer on the wall is usually mounted high, which is why the reading rarely matches how the lower bench feels.
A hat does not cool you down. It slows the rate at which the hottest air in the room reaches the most heat-sensitive part of you, which is what lets people stay in for a full round instead of ducking out early. The mechanism, and what has and has not been tested, is covered separately.
Russian banya: where the hat came from
The felt sauna hat is a banya object first. It is Russian tradition, not Finnish, and it spread into Finnish and North American sauna culture later. We say the same thing in the piece about our own name, because it is true and it is more interesting than the marketing version.
A banya runs cooler than a Finnish sauna — usually 60–70 °C — but at 40–70% humidity, which makes it feel hotter than the number suggests. It is also more physical: the venik, a bundle of soaked birch or oak branches, is used to beat the skin briskly, often by someone else, and that pushes hot air against you deliberately.
That is precisely the situation a thick felt hat was invented for. At banya humidity the hat does get damp and does lose some insulation, but it remains a real physical barrier during the venik work, and the humidity is nowhere near steam-room saturation.
Steam room and hammam: skip it
At roughly 100% relative humidity, everything in the room reaches equilibrium wet, including your hat within a few minutes. It stops being insulation and becomes a warm damp cover.
Steam rooms also run at 40–48 °C, which is not hot enough to threaten your scalp in the first place. There is no meaningful stratification to shelter from — the vapour distributes fairly evenly.

Infrared: a different problem entirely
An infrared cabin does not work by heating the air. Emitters radiate infrared that is absorbed by your skin directly, which is why people reach the same core temperature at 50 °C ambient that a traditional sauna needs 90 °C to produce. The air stays comparatively cool.
That removes the entire reason for the hat. There is no scorching air layer at head height to shield yourself from, and no meaningful stratification, because the room is not being heated from a stove at floor level.
A hat would block some radiant energy from reaching your scalp, in the same way any opaque object would. But if you are in an infrared cabin specifically to absorb radiant energy, blocking part of it is working against the point. We would not recommend one.
