There are fewer sauna hats available in Canada than the search results suggest, and a good share of what looks available is either sold out or shipping from Europe. We sell one of these hats, so read this with that in mind — which is exactly why we have put our own weaknesses in the same table as everyone else's.
Three things separate the hats worth buying from the rest: stated fibre content, stated thickness, and stated size range. A listing that gives you all three is telling you it has nothing to hide. Most give you one.
What actually matters when comparing sauna hats
Fibre content, stated as a percentage. "Wool felt" with no number is usually a blend. Blends inherit the odour behaviour of the synthetic portion — polyester retained the most odour of any fabric tested in Textile Research Journal (2007).
Micron count, or at least the word "merino." Prickle is mechanical, not chemical: fibres above roughly 30 microns are stiff enough to trigger pain receptors instead of bending. Merino runs 17–23 µm, generic wool felt often 30–40 µm. On a bare forehead, that is the difference you notice.
Thickness. Nobody has published a study on optimal sauna hat thickness — we looked. Hats on the market run from about 3 mm to 6.35 mm. Thicker holds more still air and insulates more; thinner is lighter, dries faster and packs flatter. Anyone stating a "correct" thickness is stating an opinion.
Seamless or sewn. Only wool can be true-felted into a single piece. A seam on your scalp is a raised ridge that holds water and is where the hat fails first.
Where it ships from, and whether it is in stock. A hat shipping from Europe to Canada can mean two to four weeks and a customs charge on delivery. This is the variable that changes your experience most and the one comparison posts usually ignore.

The Sauna Shop — the closest comparison
Good: 100% wool, seamless, handmade in Poland, and priced around $48 — noticeably cheaper than ours. It is a real product from a real Canadian sauna retailer, and the seamless construction we make a point of is not unique to us.
Missing: no stated thickness, no stated size range, and "wool" rather than "merino" — so you do not know the micron count going in.
Buy it if price is the deciding factor and you are comfortable ordering without the specs.
Rí — the thickest-claim brand
Good: a clearly stated size range of 54–62 cm, which is wider than ours at both ends, and a thicker build. They publish the claim that 5–8 mm is the optimal thickness for a sauna hat.
Missing: that optimum is not sourced to anything, because there is nothing to source it to — no study of sauna hat thickness exists. It is a reasonable engineering opinion presented as a finding.
Buy it if you want maximum insulation and your head is at the edges of the size range. Check the pre-order timeline before ordering.
Revolution Wool — the specific one
Good: states 6.35 mm, which is roughly double ours. That is a real, checkable number and more than twice the still air.
Missing: no stated size range. Thicker felt is also heavier when wet and slower to dry.
Halsa and STE.MARG.SCOT
Halsa's hat has been out of stock through our checks, so we cannot recommend it — a hat you cannot buy is not a contender. STE.MARG.SCOT offers two sizes, which is genuinely better than one-size for anyone at the ends of the range; the trade-off is European shipping to Canada with the delay and possible duty that implies.
Where our hat loses
We would rather you read this from us than find it out afterwards.
- It is thinner. 3 mm against Revolution Wool's 6.35 mm and Rí's 5–8 mm claim. More felt does hold more still air. If your priority is the absolute maximum insulation on a top bench, a thicker hat gives you more of it.
- One size, and a narrower one. 55–61 cm against Rí's 54–62 cm and STE.MARG.SCOT's two sizes. If you measure 53 cm or 62 cm, ours is not the right hat.
- It costs more than the cheapest option. The Sauna Shop's 100% wool seamless hat is well under ours.
- No child size. Nothing below the adult range.
- Seamless is not a differentiator. We say it because it matters, not because we are alone in it.

What none of these hats do
None of them has been tested in a published study. We searched the peer-reviewed literature for any controlled measurement of sauna hat performance and found none. Every claim on every one of these pages — ours included — rests on insulation physics rather than a trial, and you should be suspicious of any brand implying otherwise. There is a widely repeated "2020 study" in this niche claiming hat users stay in 8–12 minutes longer; it has no journal, no authors and no DOI.
